What is Traditional Upholstery?

Traditional upholstery uses natural materials such as coir (coconut fibre), animal hair and cotton as stuffing for chairs. This means that almost all of our work is biodegradable and sustainable. The stuffing is moulded into shape and when done well can last well over 100 years.

However, traditional upholstery, like slow fashion, takes time. To completely renovate a single dining chair including rubbing down the wood, repairs, waxing and upholstery can take 4-5 hours. A large puece such as an armchair a week or more. But, when you consider that foam in modern furniture may only last 5 years before going to landfill or breaking down into microplastices, the time seems worth it.
